The Marina Grande Waterfront in Capri, Italy

CAPRI, Italy — From the winding walkways through the village and along the tops of stunning cliffs over the Mediterranean (there are virtually no cars in the main village of Capri), the traditional wooden fishing boats in the harbor, the scrumptious seafood, the Roman ruins, and the role it has played in more modern history, Capri is somewhere I can’t wait to get back to.

Capri is one of those places I can’t wait to go back to. It’s been several years since I was there, but I loved everything about the place from the winding walkways through the village and along the tops of stunning cliffs over the Mediterranean (there are virtually no cars in the main village of Capri), the traditional wooden fishing boats in the harbor, the scrumptious seafood, the Roman ruins, and the role it has played in more modern history (Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower met here during World War II).

The only way to get there is by boat, either from Naples or Sorrento. It can get crowded in summer, but is very pleasant, and still warm, in the off-season.

This particular shot was taken in Capri’s Marina Grande, the harbor not the waterfront below Capri proper. It was shot with Fujichrome Provia 100F (one of my favorite color slide films, with beautiful color rendition and exceptionally fine grain) and my trusty old Nikon FM with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI lens.

Here’s another shot I took with the same setup way back when. Having grown up in and around the water, I have a particular fascination with old boats. And the colorful old wooden fishing and recreation boats of Capri are certainly charming.
