The Sydney Opera House, dominating Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour next to Circular Quay, is one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the two main architectural icons of Sydney along with the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It serves as the venue not only for opera but a wide range of performing arts. With its distinctive sails, it was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and completed in 1973.
While it doesn’t have the same kind of iconic cultural history of New York’s Statue of Liberty, its placement right in the heart of Sydney Harbour ensures that it’s seen for miles around and is one of the first things that new visitors to Sydney are drawn to. And it is most certainly distinctive.
