Thisa-wadi Temple

BAGAN, Myanmar (Burma) – Dating to 1334, Thisa-wadi Temple isn’t the grandest of the thousands of temples, stupas, and pagodas in Bagan, but it is one of a handful where it’s possible (and allowed) to climb on the upper terraces for wonderful views out over the plain of Bagan.

Myanmar / Burma Travel Update

Since I was there, the situation in Myanmar/Burma has changed a lot. In February 2021, a military coup sparked widespread civil unrest and armed conflict.

The U.S. State Department currently advises: "Do not travel to Burma due to civil unrest and armed conflict." You can find their full travel advisory and security alerts here. And you can find the British Foreign Office's travel advice for Myanmar / Burma here.

Dating to 1334, Thisa-wadi Temple is a medium-sized in the southeastern section of the Bagan Archeological Zone in Bagan, Myanmar (Burma).

While it’s not the grandest of Bagan’s temples, it’s one of the handful that have terraces that you’re allowed to climb, and they offer great views out over the plain of Bagan.

It has also been fairly extensively renovated, mostly with ornate exterior decorations on the exterior. Inside is relatively plain. On each side of a square column in the center of the building is a different statue of The Buddha, eating facing a cardinal direction.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Like most Burmese words that are rendered in English, you’ll come across variations. It is sometime rendered as Thissa-wadi.
  • Though relatively small, it has great views from the upper terraces (and yes, you’re allowed to climb up this one).
