Rome is up to its eyeballs in famous landmarks. The jagged, partially crumbling walls of the Coliseum. The immense dome of St. Peter’s Cathedral. The elaborate grandiosity of the Vatican. The sparse dignity of the Pantheon. And then there’s the Trevi Fountain.
Tourists crowd into the cramped plaza all day every day to watch the water flowing in and around the over-the-top Baroque styling that would make a Las Vegas casino designer salivate.
Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain (right hand over left shoulder) it will ensure that you return to Rome. And enough tourists try it for themselves that about 3,000 Euros a day are retrieved from the fountain floor. The funds are used to help fund a supermarket for Rome’s poor.
